Confuzzled about cons.

Living in Singapore has its own limitations: we do not have con(ventions). No Swancon, no Wiscon, no Gen-con. Sure, we have cosplay events... but as for a large-scale convention, nope. We do have SPORE-con, a gaming convention (run by my husband), mostly focussing on gaming (war-games, board-games and stuff in between). But the fan inside me craves interaction with other fans, say, in literary science fiction/speculative fiction. I would like to attend a panel discussion...

I used to attend Swancon for a couple of years when I was studying in Western Australia and all the Swancons I'd attended were fantastic (one being quite memorable when I met my future husband). Now, back in Singapore, I wonder when I would attend a con again...

Are there no Asia-Pacific cons?

I also thought that you and yr hubby helped to organise a con a few years ago (perhaps that was RP, not fannish?)?

My point: could you start one?

The con was SPORE-con. We are organizing the second one this year. It is more role-play/RPG, wargaming and boardgaming - not fannish.

I could start one. I just need to figure out the logistics. Already the logistics for SPORE-con are quite overwhelming (but we are getting there).

No Asia-Pacific cons that I am aware of. The ones I know are mostly gaming/RPG-related. The most popular ones here (in Singapore) are organized by the cosplay groups and not even considered "conventions". Just gatherings of cosplayers and anime-fans.

And adding some more thoughts...

The gamers we know are also fans. Mostly guys (D's shop tends to draw in more males but we have a few girls as well). The girls I know are also avid fanfiction readers (slash and yaoi) - but I think they would also like a general panel on speculative fiction writing or writing itself. One I know would really like panels on manga art... Mmm.

So, as I have said and I am repeating myself (*LOL*), I just need to start working on the logistics. I also need to wait until I give birth two months later...

Oh yes, absolutely take care of yourself first! If you know that there's an audience or organising base out there for a con, that's the best place to start.
